Seasons in my kaleidoscope

LUBNA M CHOWDHURY

1. Spring

Abundance of colors & the fragrances of the flowers in the air fascinate me. Smell of pollen in the air, bees are roaming with a continuous buzz, beautiful butterfly fluttering it’s wing with its subtle touch collecting nectar & a blue bird trying to take shelter in my balcony then I knew spring is here.

2. Summer:

In this blazing heat that scorches you, when you have a long exhausting tiring day; thinking, if you were a fish you'll be down under the water, sitting quietly   for a moment.  But don't even wait for that; go to the pool for a little splish & splash in the water.  Swim, jump, dive, & show off all your acrobatic moves, then quench your thirst with a glass of freshly squeezed lemon juice sitting under the shade of a tree. You'll be happy to see that was your best time in the entire day.

3. Fall:

Crimson red, bright orange & pale yellow are the colors of fall all over the place. Soon leaves will start to fall. If you sit by the stream, you’ll see almost mirror- image- reflection of nature in the crystal-clear water. If you walk by the woods, crunch of dry leaves will be playing music to your ears. A gush of   air will come, swirling the dead leaves in a circle & blow away to the unknown. A joy of heaven on earth when you'll see a squirrel with its bushy tail, winking at you forgetting his shyness & walking by you in equal terms.

4. Winter:

The harshness of cold here is so severe that all creatures on earth have taken shelter to their home. Soon snow in old man's attire will be blanketing   all over- the lakes, the parks, the walkways as if they never existed.  Birds from the north are now flying south. A freezing cold wind is whistling   &   whispering you - it's time to go home.

Season's first snow falls in 2012. il neige.

Snow always fascinates me. My first snow experience was when I saw snow falling from my window & the snow plowing vehicles were piling the snow in the street. The continuous humm of the machine working all night went on from the distance. Snowflakes dusting on my head in the freezing cold at night like a powdered cotton balls, I took the camera out but saw no one but only me. Expecting the following morning would be one-foot-high snow covering all over the place, but weather was as always -unpredictable; next day it turned out to be a bright sunny day.

In the morning from the complex, people came & cleaned the walkway, with snow scraper neighbors were shoving off the snow from their cars & kids went to school with heavy coat, hoods & gloves on. I tried to open the windows & balcony door, but they were jammed with snow. Sometimes, after the snow fall comes the bright sunny day, kids go out & play but when snow comes with rain & wind --i.e snow emergency, which makes everyone homebound.

 Drama in Real life

Drama began on the way back from DC, caught up in the snow emergency all the way to Baltimore for 2 hrs. It was my first-time experience on interstate. Amazing sight in I-95. Car driven with minimum speed at 10 mi/hr. It was snowing like shredded cotton balls, but weather was clear all the way to end.  Inside the cars the passengers were quiet, also the kids. They didn't come out of the cars hoping there will be rescue squad will be the only option for their present crisis. The vehicles in I 95 N in random order, came to a complete stop also I was surprised to see how the car in front turns 360 degrees couple of times within a minute - spinning & skidding to the side isle. Some cars with zero motion got stuck on the chunks of hard- rock- snow & their wheels spinning 60 miles/hr & snow coming out like a jet.  Police cars were running, speeding with us. Emergency vehicles were engaged in clearing interstate. then piling snow on the side isle. They are trying to rescue the cars those couldn't move & those who were out of gas due to slow speed. Snow will be cleared in the morning; it may be a temporary crisis or may turn into something unthinkable; weather became perfect only after when we crossed Baltimore.

5. Beauty of the night:

When the silver moon shines over the sky making friends with millions of stars, you’ll be amazed to see the serenity & quietness of the night. The nature sleeps when you wander, wonder & ponder. The light bug dances in the moonlight, guards when the creatures crawled up to their home until sunrise.  The smell of wildflowers will make you insane.  Air stands still, soon the darkness engulfs all over. Endless zezz of the insects goes on in the distance.

6 May born or Firey ball Lily--

Multiple tiny fiery red blooms that grow in a spherical array. There is a story behind single bloomed May born. The anecdote: I bought this plant from the college nursery & was nurturing it, so it could survive & finally it bloomed into beautiful May born as it always blooms once a year during the month of May. Everyone in our family appreciated except the gardener; he was more concern about the clay tub it occupied. When the flower wilted, he was about to throw the plant, put something of his choice of plant, but I caught him, showed him he ignored the bulb which was still hidden under the soil & kept the plant so that it could bloom next year & the years after.

6.  Sun rise & sun set in the beach:

A red- orange glow in the horizon rises high slowly, some of the red oozes out. You can stretch your hand to reach out & take some of the colors &   put them on your canvas. Waves are splashing, a flock of seagulls are sitting on the rock, flapping their wings; some of them are flying high in the sky.  When sun is setting with a big sigh, sweeping all the wearies from the world back to the sea; walk barefoot in the sandy beach & listen to the sound of the shell, maybe they are inviting you to join their circle of life.

7. Early morning mist:

Whenever I go out in a misty day, I could smell the earth fresh with dew drops shining on the cut edges of the grass like a drop of crystal.  Smoky appearance in the nature may be short lived but creates a heavenly luxuriant ambiance, allure people to get lost in the wilderness.  The quietness & the tranquility are so magnificent that makes me feel the moment which I capture will never end.

8. Rain:

Rain starts to fall in big drops, soon there will be heavy down pouring of rain. The greens, as well as the streetlights are swaying in a rhythm, dancing & prancing. The rumbling grumbling & bellowing thunder is added to the festivity. Black birds are lined up, sitting on the electric wire in a row, soaking wet. But it couldn't stop the flow of traffic, still the cars are running at even speed. People are walking in a brisk pace, going to their destination- no time to rest.  Herds of angry grey clouds have taken over the sun. Next day in the morning when the rain stops, shrubs are grown a little; there's the smell of wet earth & mist all over.

Woods in the winter -

Only 5 miles drive from where I reside, where roads are windy, tortuous & narrow like a serpentine on both side which is more scenic; specially when in full moon, the forest looks spectacular to watch but scary. woods are full of Hazelnut, Ash, Chestnut, Oak, Beech, Hickory. Usually, it's pitch dark at night, squirrels are plenty, wild rabbits, sometimes spotted deer but they shy away from people. In the evening when sun has sunken to the west; the evening star which is big & bright stands like a compass & the stars are anchored like a million of magic lanterns. The old wizard who holds the seven stars in one hand & on the other hand he is ready to strike with his wand when, at every opportunity, the devil tries to change the universe.

Don't get intimidated or inspired by this article; I wrote this article mostly out from my imagination, curiosity & real-life experiences. It's not recommended for children to explore.
